Did you see the sun set where you are today? Sana saw the sun set in Florida today! Try Fluffy the Science Dog’s experiment listed in the “Comment” section and write or photograph your sunset!

Does the setting sun look the same in different parts of the world? How many children watch the sunset?

Hi! Fluffy,

I love looking at the setting sun and wait for it to disappear
completely.  And wonder how the setting sun looks in different parts of
the world and how many kids are watching it?

Love,

Sana

  1. Dear Sana and other “Kid-Scientists”,

Estimate how long will it take for the sun to set today!

Look at Sana’s sunset photo and imagine you are standing on the beach. In the late afternoon the sun is low in the sky.

Hold your hand at arm’s length with your palm facing you; thumb is on top. Each finger is equal to 15 minutes. Holding this arm position face the setting sun.

How many fingers can you fit underneath the sun and above the horizon (water or trees or buildings or ground?) Do not block the sun.

4 fingers = 1 hour before sun sets
3 fingers = 45 minutes before sun sets
2 fingers = 30 minutes before sun sets
1 finger = 15 minutes before sun sets
    0 fingers…. is it dark?

Sun safety – never stare directly at the sun; do this experiment with an adult and look quickly at your “finger timers.”

Thanks for getting us to look at sunsets, Sana!
I think sunset watching is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world!

    Love,
    Fluffy the Science Dog
