Day 5 (Page Two): The Experiment – Close Packing in Microgravity

What do you think will happen to these plastic spheres the size of marbles when we take them into microgravity on Thursday?

What do you think will happen to these plastic spheres the size of marbles when we take them into microgravity on Thursday?

HOW DO YOU THINK MATERIALS WILL PACK TOGETHER IN SPACE?

Bringing things into space is expensive. It costs $10,000 to send every pound of material into space. Does the packing of material change in microgravity?

A long time ago a scientist named Kepler noticed that things on earth seem to pack in hexagonal patterns. Do you think this will happen in zero or microgravity?

There is a handle built into the  experiment to release plastic spheres inside the plexiglass plates (similar to a pin ball game). We are trying to see how the small spheres or marbles pack together on earth, in hypergravity and in microgravity. What do YOU think will happen to the spheres in microgravity (this is when there is so little gravity that things float)? What do YOU think will happen to the spheres in hypergravity (this is when there is more gravity then there is on earth)? We need to hear from you soon because we are flying in the “Zero G” airplane on Thursday morning!
